Let’s Talk About Maskne

As we navigate the current global pandemic and all of the uncertainty that’s come with it, there’s
one important step we all can take to help keep ourselves and others safe: wearing a face mask
whenever we go out in public. But as masks become our new norm, unfortunately so does
“maskne” –the zits, blemishes, and acne we crop up in areas around the mouth, nose, and chin.

What causes maskne?

Face masks tend to trap dirt and oil in our pores, causing everything from single zits to full-on
acne breakouts. The friction caused by wearing these fabrics tight against our delicate skin can
also compromise the skin barrier, resulting in dryness and irritation and can potentially trigger
other issues such as rashes, rosacea and eczema. Add on all of the emotional stress we’re
dealing with due to COVID-19, and you have the perfect recipe for problematic skin.

Although maskne was common during the summer since the heat caused sweat, bacteria, and
dirt to get trapped underneath your mask, you can still expect maskne throughout the cooler
months, as well, as a result of friction clogging up your pilosebaceous (acne-forming) glands.

The good news is there are a few similar ways you can prevent maskne this fall and winter.

How can we prevent maskne?

At Lunalis, our goal is to create powerful plant-based products that leave you with your
healthiest, most radiant skin ever–and that includes preventing and fighting maskne. Below, we
put together an easy guide to keeping breakouts at bay.

Cleanse: First things first, it’s important to gently wash your face with a natural, fragrance-free
cleanser both morning and night to rinse away any surface oils and impurities. You want your
skin to be clean before you put on your mask, as well as after you’ve been wearing it all day.

Detox: In order to keep your skin maskne-free and in its healthiest state, opt for using a
detoxifying treatment twice a week, such as our Skin Revival Clay Mask. This powerhouse
treatment works its way deep into the pores, washing away buildup of oil, dead skin cells and
other skin-irritating debris without ever drying you out. Kaolin and Montmorillonite Clay cleanse,
exfoliate, and polish the skin while absorbing excess oil and unclogging pores, and our medley
of plant-based oils and Saffron simultaneously hydrate and refresh. The skin is left soft, clean
and radiant–and, more importantly, healthy and balanced.

Hydrate: After cleansing and masking, it’s important to keep the skin hydrated and protected
while also repairing any damage to the skin barrier. Apply a lightweight moisturizer packed with
nourishing ingredients, such as our Gold Extreme Facial Oil. This luxe antioxidant-rich facial oil
deeply moisturizes, softens, and balances the skin with its blend of pomegranate and jojoba,
while 24k gold flakes induce a heavenly glow and reduce inflammation. This radiance-boosting
formula is luscious and creates a protective barrier between your skin and mask without
clogging pores.

Final Thoughts

Caring for your mask is just as important as caring for your skin in order to prevent maskne. You
can use cotton masks which produce the least friction, but make sure to wash your reusable
mask after each wear.
Maskne may be the major skin threat we face right now, but as long as you cleanse, detox, and
hydrate with Lunalis, you’ll be your most radiant self – even underneath your mask!
